“Since the invention of the steam engine, energy sources have
been central to economic activity. Mobility and manufacturing,
key drivers of economic development, have long relied on coal,
oil, and gas. While alternatives like wind, solar, and nuclear power
have existed, coal and oil have remained the more affordable
options. It is only in recent decades, spurred by the looming threat
of climate disaster, that the world has begun to seriously explore
these alternatives regardless of the cost. As focus shifted to wind
and solar, economies of scale made the transition increasingly
economically viable. The intermittency of wind and solar energies
further accelerated advancements in energy storage, with
hydrogen emerging as a promising solution. The shift from fossil
fuels to renewable energy will lead to a dramatic redistribution of
geopolitical power. Oil-rich nations will no longer enjoy the luxury
of being rentier states, as countries like India and China, heavily
dependent on energy imports, find the dream of energy security
more achievable. This book examines this pivotal transformation
in the economic history of Homo sapiens.”

About Author

"R.N. Prasher is a retired IAS officer of the 1975 batch with extensive experience in the water and power sectors. He served as the principal secretary of Haryana’s irrigation and power departments and was a member of the Bhakra Beas Management Board. Prasher has been an outspoken advocate for the suspension of the 1960 Indus Water Treaty between India and Pakistan, arguing that water-scarce India could utilize the water currently flowing into the sea as permitted by the treaty. After his retirement, he served as the principal advisor to the chief minister of Haryana, overseeing inter-state water disputes across various forums, including the Supreme Court of India. He later became the chairman of the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission. Prasher is also a regular contributor to Chandigarh’s Daily World, where he writes a weekly editorial. He has published over 230 articles, primarily focused on geopolitics. A passionate traveller, he frequently drives solo in the high Himalayas, gaining valuable insights into the challenges and potential of the region’s rivers for India."
