Chakravarti Rajagopalachari

Born on December 10, 1878, in Thorapalli, Tamil Nadu, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, fondly known as Rajaji, led a remarkable life. His multifaceted journey encompassed roles as an Indian politician, freedom fighter, advocate, journalist, historian, and statesman. Serving as India’s final Governor-General before its transition to a republic in 1950, Rajaji shattered the British tradition that had long held the position.

His illustrious political career included stints as Chairman of the Indian National Congress, Premier of the Madras Presidency, Governor of West Bengal, Minister for Home Affairs in the Indian Union, and Chief Minister of Madras state. Recognizing his dedicated service, he became one of the earliest recipients of the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor.
