The Harivamsa is a revered Sanskrit text regarded as a natural supplement to the Mahābhārata. While the Mahābhārata culminates with the great battle of Kurukṣetra, the Harivamsa extends the narrative, detailing the pastimes of the Supreme Lord that took place after the war, including His divine disappearance from the mortal realm.
Traditionally divided into three sections—Harivamsa-parva (55 chapters), Viṣṇu-parva (128 chapters), and Bhaviṣya-parva (135 chapters)—the text contains nearly sixteen thousand verses. First narrated by the sage Vaiśampāyana to King Janamejaya, the Harivamsa was later retold by Sūta Gosvāmī (Ugraśrava) at the request of the sages of Naimiṣāraṇya, led by Śaunaka Ṛṣi.
For followers of the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition, the Harivamsa holds special significance, as many ācāryas have drawn upon its verses to illuminate the transcendental qualities and activities of Lord Kṛṣṇa. It is both a continuation of the epic narrative and a rich devotional text that deepens one’s appreciation for the Lord’s eternal pastimes.
Whether approached as an epic supplement, a theological treasure, or a devotional scripture, the Harivamsa offers readers a captivating blend of history, philosophy, and divine narrative that will nourish both the intellect and the heart.
