About Author

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, India. Through nonviolent resistance, Gandhi helped India win her freedom from British rule. He was one of the most respected leaders of the 1900s, earning the title of Mahatma (Great Soul) and Father of the Nation. Some of the personalities that influenced Gandhi greatly were Jesus Christ, Thoreau, Tolstoy and Ruskin Bond. Gandhi was the victim of child marriage, marrying Kasturba when both were thirteen years old. The couple had four children. Gandhi was sent to study law in London and returned to India in 1891 to practice. But when his law career failed to take off, he undertook a one-year contract to do legal work in South Africa. Gandhi stayed for 21 years in South Africa, working tirelessly for the rights of the Indians settled there. The seeds of the famous method of action called Satyagraha based upon the principles of non-violence, truth, civil disobedience and courage were sown here. Gandhi deemed Satyagraha as the vehicle to obtain social and political goals. Gandhi returned to India in 1915, and within 15 years he rose to become the leader of the Indian Nationalist Movement. The Story of My Experiments with Truth is Gandhi’s autobiography, covering the journey from his birth in 1869 to the year 1921. No wonder that it is the world’s largest selling autobiography.
