Arun Shourie’s genius behind imparting his methodical research to persuasive writing is yet again evident in Falling over Backwards. With facts, figures, and statements, combined with the confrontational rhetoric of the author, Falling over Backwards offers a riveting read about the truths behind reservations in jobs and education in India. The issue has been debated throughout the country since the Mandal Commission Report was unleashed in 1989. Arun Shourie, with his inimitable attention to details, asserts that the pro-reservation judgements of the Supreme Court can also pose danger to the dynamism of our social and political systems in a long run. He discusses whether reservations have served the actual purpose they were intended for, along with the history and debates held in the Constituent Assembly on the same. Shourie asserts that reservations are a root cause for much of the problems plaguing India today. The book is a must-read for those who wish to know more about reservations and its effects in detail.
